Dry Cupping Therapy
According to WebMD, “Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being.”
Dry Cupping, also known as Myofascial Decompression, is considered safe; however, to receive the best care, this procedure should be performed by a highly qualified physical therapist.
What to Expect During Cupping Treatment
During treatment, the physical therapist will use a “cup” device to create a suction on the skin. This decompression of the tissues improves blood flow and helps the underlying tight muscle to relax. The increased blood flow brings important nutrients into the tissues which supports healing. Patients describe the treatment as a sensation similar to pinching or a strong pressure, but not painful. Cupping may cause some bruising on the skin and some soreness for up to 24 hours.
